Maori Kiwi Drawing After our amazing introduction with aunty paula, we explore artwork based on tohu symbols and patterns in traditional maori art, and then do an artwork bas. The maori legend of the kiwi bird is an important story in new zealand culture. tānemahuta, god of forests and birds, noticed his tree children were ill and called on the birds for help. however, only the kiwi bird agreed. it sacrificed its ability to fly to save the trees. as a result, it became famous and beloved. Kiwi looked up at the sunlit trees. he looked around and saw his family. then kiwi looked at the cold damp earth. looking around once more, he turned to tāne hokahoka and said, “i will.”. great was the joy in the hearts of tāne hokahoka and tāne mahuta, for this little bird was giving them hope. but tāne mahuta felt he should warn kiwi. 6. ‘little kiwi’s matariki’ craft. this list of new zealand crafts for kids isn’t just perfect for waitangi day, it’s also great for matariki, the māori new year. matariki is the maori name of the pleiades star cluster, the rising of which begins the new year. the teacher’s mag brings us a craft based on the book, ‘ little kiwi.
