Ikea Billy Bookcase Library Hack Remington Avenue How we made our billy library wall bookcase. we first removed the skirting board from the wall. following that we put the malm desk in place and built a timber frame to the right of that for the bestÅ frame unit (we used the 180cm x 38cm unit) to sit on. (the timber was what we call 4 x 2 in aus). Step one: first, i built a base for my bookcases. a base elevates the shelves from the floor, and gives the entire piece a feeling of substance. the base is built out of a 2×4 frame, with interior studs to support the plywood top of the base. step two: cut a piece of plywood to cover the top of the 2×4 base frame. Steps i took to diy my built in billy bookcases. 1. i started out by framing out the two walls that flanked either side of the bookshelves using 2×4’s. i wanted these to act like walls framing in the built in billy bookshelves, thus i needed the walls deep enough to recess the billy’s in about 1 1 2 inches from the finished front. 2. Step 1 figure out the plan. to begin, figure out the plan. to do that, measure the width of the wall that the bookcases will go on. the billy bookcase comes in two widths: 31 1 2″ or 15 3 4″. those same widths come in the 93 1 4″, 79 1 2″ or the 41 3 4″ height. so there’s 6 size choices. A little reminder to plug your tv in the wall and bring the cords around the back before you attach the 2 bookcases to the wall. we were all finished with the built ins and went to plug in the tv when we realized we forgot to account for the cords. we ended up having to drill into the wall and shelf creating a crevice to run the cords.
