St. nicholas' church is the original parish church of chislehurst in the diocese of rochester and situated within the chislehurst conservation area. the grade ii* listed building was erected circa ad 1460, and enlarged in the 19th century, although a church has been on the site for over a thousand years.

The school of english church music (secm) was founded in 1927 by sir sydney nicholson, and opened at buller’s wood in chislehurst in 1929. in 1945, it became the royal school of church music (rscm), and moved to canterbury cathedral. in 1954, it moved to addington palace and then in 1996 to cleveland lodge, dorking. Musician and composer. the ashes of sir sydney nicholson, organist and composer, lie in the west cloister of westminster abbey. his gravestone was re cut in 1975. it reads: "sir sydney hugo nicholson m.v.o. organist of westminster abbey 1919 1928 founder and director of the royal school of church music".
